Olajuwon Olagbegi As we continue to build on a strong tradition of research excellence at The University of Southern Mississippi, we are excited to carry forward this fundraising initiative in honor of the late Dr. Stanley A. Kuczaj. As the former director of the Marine Mammal Behavior and Cognition Laboratory, Dr. Kuczaj made a lasting impact on the Experimental Psychology program, inspiring students to think critically, explore boldly, and develop a genuine passion for research. In that same spirit, the USM Experimental Psychology Student Government (EPSG) is dedicated to supporting the next generation of scholars. Our goal is to raise funds that directly expand student opportunities—helping provide essential presentation materials and supporting travel to academic conferences where students can share their work, gain valuable feedback, and grow as researchers. These experiences are often transformative, opening doors and shaping future careers. The funds raised will support the Experimental Psychology Research Fund, which plays a vital role in advancing student-led research across areas such as social issues, cognition, perception, and beyond. By contributing, you are directly investing in students’ ability to ask meaningful questions, conduct impactful research, and contribute to the broader field of psychology. SOSE Hydrographic Science The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hydrographic Science program works hard every year to send as many students as possible to the two premier North American hydrography conferences: US Hydro and the Canadian Hydrographic Conference (CHC), which alternate each year. Thanks to generous scholarships from The Hydrographic Society of America (THSOA) National and Southeast Chapter, as well as grants from the Republic of Korea’s partnership with the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), we’ve been able to give our students life-changing professional development opportunities. This year, we are short on funds to cover travel expenses for CHC 2026 in Montreal, Canada (April 27-30, 2026). Why CHC Matters for Our Students The Canadian Hydrographic Conference is one of the premier events in North America for technical exchange, professional development, and high-quality training in hydrography. CHC offers: - A full day of intensive training workshops - Targeted technical sessions focused on real-world hydrographic challenges - Autonomous systems (USVs, UUVs, UAVs) - Data acquisition with tactically relevant equipment - Advanced data processing - Complex Data Management With the explosive growth in AI and Machine Learning, staying current in this rapidly evolving field is only possible by continuously engaging with the latest developments from industry, academia, and government. All of which will converge at CHC. The Graduate School The University of Southern Mississippi is dedicated to training future professionals in preparation for academic and research-oriented careers. The Graduate School provides opportunities for students to cultivate the skills required for success in academia and beyond. <a href="https://www.usm.edu/graduate-school/professionals-preparation.php">Professionals in Preparation</a> (PIP) is a year-long series of workshops developed to enhance the marketable workplace skills of our graduate students. The workshops offer practical guidance and hands-on activities beyond the regular academic curricula. The Graduate School facilitates 12 PIP workshops across the fall and spring semesters. Each session is led by either a current USM graduate faculty member or an invited guest speaker. The PIP professional development workshop series is open to all graduate students and is designed to help them improve "transferable skills" that will set them apart in an increasingly competitive job market. Leadership, effective communication, problem-solving, project management, and professionalism are just a few examples of transferable skills that apply across various industries and fields. Our final and most popular workshop focuses on Professional Dining Etiquette. Proper dining etiquette is vital for making a favorable impression during lunch/dinner interviews and in social business situations. The Spring 2025 workshop will be held at the Ogletree House, located at USM's Hattiesburg Campus, where students will experience a three-course meal while learning the importance of etiquette in the modern workplace in enhancing one’s professional presence. Join us in advancing this professional development endeavor to ensure the PIP program at the Southern Miss Graduate School continues to thrive. Your contribution will assist in funding the annual dining etiquette workshop, reserve future meeting spaces, acquire professional development materials for students, and recruit guest speakers. Join us in commemorating Clyde Kennard's legacy and supporting racial equality in education through this lecture. The Center for Black Studies The Center for Black Studies recently launched the Clyde Kennard Lecture, an event honoring Clyde Kennard, the first African American to attempt enrollment at segregated Mississippi Southern College in the 1950s (this institution, later becoming The University of Southern Mississippi, was integrated in 1965). In honor of its namesake, the lecture commemorates Clyde Kennard’s experience as an unsung civil rights activist, who sparked progressive changes in the movement for racial integration of higher education throughout Mississippi and the nation at large. MAKING A CONTRIBUTION We ask that you consider making gifts to contribute to the costs associated with organizing the Clyde Kennard lecture. All funds will be used to cover expenses related to this event. Although gifts of any amount are greatly appreciated, we kindly ask you to consider making a minimum contribution of $19.55, which acknowledges the year (1955) Kennard made his first enrollment attempt. This historic event had a rippling effect leading to changes on campus and within the local community in the waning days of segregation. We ask that all other donations include 55 in the funding amount. (For example: $19.55, $55.00, $100.55, $255.00, $555.55, 955.00, etc.) In supporting the Clyde Kennard Lecture, you join others in honoring his unfulfilled mission of obtaining a quality education and in promoting his inspiring belief that “The end product of an education is a greater and more useful participation in the art of living in a civilized society.” Clyde Kennard’s contribution to the life of this university is immeasurable considering the diversity of students, faculty and staff at The University Southern Mississippi today as reflective also of the local community. The Southern Chorale will travel to the Michigan ACDA conference in October for a headline performance in Mount Pleasant, MI. USM Choral Activities The Southern Chorale will be featured as the headline performer at the Michigan Conference of American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) on October 21st in Mt. Pleasant on the campus of Central Michigan University. While in Michigan, collaborative recruitment concerts will also be presented with Eastern Michigan University (Thursday the 19th), Albion College (Friday the 20th), and Central Michigan University in Midland at First Presbyterian Church (Sunday the 22nd). Traveling with the ensemble will be noted composers James Mulholland (Indiana) and Richard Burchard (Pennsylvania), and the Chorale will feature their music during the program. The Southern Miss Alumni Association is helping alert alums in the area and encouraging attendance at these events. Students will be visiting the Motown Museum in Detroit and will have access to the Professional Choral Conference during the day on Saturday. This invitation is an incredible honor, and the Southern Chorale is excited to be traveling to the beautiful Great Lakes state for this opportunity. With this opportunity comes the cost of traveling with our 60-member ensemble. We have worked hard to gather support and raise money for the trip, but we need your help to get us to the finish line. Any amount will help provide our hard-working and dedicated singers the chance to travel and perform without the stress of paying out of pocket for this experience. Donations received through this project will help provide students with travel expenses. The Southern Chorale has a long history of excellence at Southern Miss, the most comprehensive School of Music in Mississippi. Membership consists primarily of music majors and graduate students in Conducting and Voice. Under Gregory Fuller’s leadership, the ensemble has been chosen by blind/refereed audition to perform on sixteen occasions at state, regional and national conferences over the past twenty years. In addition, the Chorale has presented over 150 concerts in sixteen states and fourteen countries, including Estonia, Latvia, Spain, South Korea, Norway, Sweden, Jamaica, Romania, Hungary, Mexico, Austria, The Czech Republic, France and England. The Chorale has participated in many important premieres of new oratorio and extended works. Most recently, the Southern Chorale performed the European premiere of “St. Michael Songs” by Estonian composer Tõnu Kõrvits. The performance was broadcast over Estonian Public Radio. We hope you consider supporting this special initiative, and we look forward to sharing all the incredible memories that are made during this trip.

USM Clinical Psychology <blockquote> “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'” -Mr. Rogers</blockquote> Despite an abundance of bad news and negativity in the world right now, The Clinical Psychology Graduate Student Organization (CPGSO) believes USM is a campus of good neighbors. CPGSO is a student-led organization of doctoral students who are dedicated to increasing access to mental healthcare in the Hattiesburg community. Members recognized that oftentimes clients of the USM Center for Behavioral Health have to skip therapy sessions or discontinue needed services because of financial hardships. Seeking mental health services requires an abundance of courage, and it is heartbreaking for someone to find that courage but not receive treatment because of financial hurdles. Since July 2018, the CPGSO has helped fund 125 therapy sessions, and we want to continue offering that support for those who can benefit from it. So, we're asking our neighbors to help. Those seeking services at our clinic are people in your community - maybe someone you know or maybe a stranger you pass by everyday. Whether you're living in a dorm on Golden Eagle Dr., in downtown Hattiesburg, or representing Southern Miss across the country, you are connected in our USM community web, and we need your help. We offer services for children, adolescents, and adults of the Hattiesburg community and USM students, faculty, and staff. Our services include individual, child, family, couples and group therapy, comprehensive diagnostic evaluations/ assessments, consultation in various areas, including school and Head Start consultation, parent training, and select pre-employment screenings/evaluations. Our goal is to raise $1,000. Individually, it may feel like we can't change the world or take on the financial responsibility of a neighbor, but together we can make that difference. Help us secure specialized training that will significantly increase the number of providers who can conduct essential/crucial autism evaluations in our area! WHY DONATE? A diagnostic evaluation for autism is required before children can access critical autism intervention services. Due to the specialized skillset needed and the complexity of diagnosing autism, few providers offer this service. Even fewer providers offer this service for underinsured or uninsured children. As a result, families often find themselves on long waitlists for autism evaluations. This is precious time that children are missing out on critical interventions and therapy services. The Center for Behavioral Health and School of Psychology recently received a grant to fund a significant portion of the cost of a two-day ADOS-2 training for our clinicians. The ADOS-2 is the gold standard for autism evaluations and requires specialized training. The training will directly increase the number of providers that are able to conduct evidence-based autism evaluations. We need your help to fund the remaining costs of the training. This fundraising effort, to name the stage in USM’s Mannoni Performing Arts Center the "Thomas V. Fraschillo Stage," not only recognizes the impact Dr. Fraschillo had on his students and the School of Music at Southern Miss, but also serves as a physical representation of his long-lasting legacy here. More than a beloved member of The University of Southern Mississippi family, Dr. Fraschillo is an inspiration to all who have had the privilege to work with him. His impact goes beyond just the lives he touched during his 28-year tenure at Southern Miss. “Dr. Fraschillo elevated his musicality, that of his students and the entire School of Music at USM during his career. His students loved him and thrived under him,” said University Provost Steven Moser. “There is no end to the influence he has had on bands in Mississippi through his conducting, instruction and genuine care.” In January 2022, director of the School of Music, Dr. Colin McKenzie, along with colleague and friend, Dr. David Gregory, initiated this fundraising project in partnership with the USM Foundation. It is 90 percent complete, with $10,000 left to raise and finalize the effort. While the stage will be named in honor of Dr. Fraschillo, all gifts received will support an endowed scholarship for band students at The University of Southern Mississippi. Making a gift to support this effort will permanently acknowledge the impact Dr. Thomas V. Fraschillo made at The University of Southern Mississippi and beyond. Center for Behavioral Health The USM Center for Behavioral Health (CBH) is the premier behavioral health clinical training facility in the Gulf South region for training future psychologists and counselors. With over 65 active graduate clinicians and 10-12 faculty supervisors operating at any given time, this center offers state-of-the-art training experiences for future doctoral-level clinical, counseling, and school psychologists as well as master’s level licensed professional counselors while providing evidence-based assessment and therapy services to our regional community. By offering services at a low cost, sliding scale fee, the Center for Behavioral Health is able to provide services to many individuals that would not otherwise be able to access care. This academic year, we have already served 285 individuals, many of which would be unable to afford mental health care. Specifically, up to 17% of the individuals are uninsured, and up to 48% are underinsured. We are proud to support our campus and community by providing high-quality, low-cost services to our community! We are looking for your help in raising money to help pay for costumes for our show! The USM Opera Following the successful run of "Too Many Sopranos" featuring a cast of puppets during the height of the COVID-19 crisis, USM's Southern Opera and Musical Theatre Company returns with another iteration of COVID safe performances. When the University announced that all indoor activities would be masked, the creative team threw out the original concept and design that would have been seen on the stage of the Mannoni Performing Arts Center and went back to the drawing board. When the idea of taking the opera outside was proposed, it was initially scoffed at. "There are too many variables that could go wrong. Where would you even do it? How can you make it look and sound good? Would people even want to come to the show?" were just a few of our biggest questions. Someone mentioned the Southern Station, the recently built structure funded by the Southern Miss Alumni Association, at Spirit Park. After we took one look at the space, the idea set in motion. Hansel and Gretel has been done time and time again, so our design needed to have a unique flair and some level of "easy" accessibility for us to procure and the audience to understand. With that in mind, we chose to set our show in the 70's, an era almost immediately recognizable in its fashion and overall aesthetic. With a concept in mind, we set to work putting together a list of needs to make an outdoor opera, a feat that USM hasn't attempted since the 1960's, a reality that would be family-friendly and enjoyable for all. Our idea for "Opera on the Green: Hansel and Gretel" was to offer live performances with quality music, a fun atmosphere, and, of course, a food truck! This brand new space comes with a multitude of supplementary needs to make our show a success. Between the costs for outside vendors to help facilitate lighting and sound and regular costs needed to put a show (music rights, set construction, prop creation, venue costs, rented equipment, etc.) we have found ourselves wanting. We believe that art is just as much about the community as it is about the performers, and what better way to incorporate the community than to open doors to allow for community-based contribution in making the dreams of a few a reality for the many. We are always grateful to the USM School of Music for its financial contributions allotted to the Southern Opera and Musical Theatre Company, but the full extent of a show overshadows the operating budget. The funds gained from this campaign are purely centered on making our costume design come to life. To really pay tribute to the 70's style our design would showcase leisure suits, the looks of the young Brady children feature on "The Brady Bunch", stylings of Mama Cass, a Stevie Nicks tribute, and much more! Our costume designer is Hattiesburg's own, Tammy Mansfield, who has worked on shows with the Southern Opera and Musical Theatre Company as well as FestivalSouth, Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera (HCLO), and Hub City Players. Tammy was the genius behind all of the puppet costumes in "Too Many Sopranos." Freshman student, Isabella Ragazzi, will be assisting Tammy in the creation and maintenance of the costumes for Hansel and Gretel.

Assist us in better telling the story of membership at Southern Miss. Help us plan more events for prospective students, more alumni engagement events and more! Fraternity and Sorority membership has been a staple involvement experience for so many students at Southern Miss. Since 1935, people have joined a community seeking to engage with their peers, excel in the classroom, become involved on campus and give back to those around them. Thousands of notable alumni across the country attribute much of their success to the experiences and connections they gained from fraternity and sorority membership. We want this experience to continue to thrive for the thousands of Golden Eagles to come! The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life is home to three governing councils: the College Panhellenic Council, the Interfraternity Council and the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Those three councils are home to a combined 27 chapters. Our staff and students have begun the process of evaluating and improving all that we do in order to continue to attract the best and the brightest to our communities. Southern Miss experienced it's largest incoming class in 2018 and we want to help our University keep that momentum! This year we will transform the way we tell the story of fraternity and sorority membership at Southern Miss. In order to do that, we need to begin to tell our story to the many prospective students and their families who are both in our backyards and around the region. This spring, we have begun the process of doing just that. There are already large scale events set in motion that will invite thousands of prospective students to Hattiesburg for the sole purpose of learning more about all that membership in one of our chapters has to offer. With your help, we can continue on the right path. With your donation, our office and its students can continue to plan and implement more programs for prospective students, more alumni engagement events and increased mailing communication with prospective students and their families. The Children's Center “Not being able to speak is not the same as not having something to say.” ~Rosemary Crossely At The Children’s Center, we know first-hand just how much truth lies in this statement. We currently provide cost-free therapy for over 100 children in Southern Mississippi and while their needs are wide-ranging, the one thing that all of our children have in common is a difficulty expressing themselves verbally. Some come to us having never uttered a word, while others are talking up a storm, but in a language all their own, indiscernible to others. Imagine wanting desperately to tell the world what you’re thinking, but being incapable of doing so. Every child deserves to be able to communicate successfully – to play with a friend, to tell their family when they’re hungry, happy, or frustrated, to protest or to celebrate, and to express love. And the good news is they absolutely can, if given the right tools and therapy to do so. And our staff at The Children’s Center is 100% committed to providing these tools, tailoring their therapy to find the best way for each child to express him/herself. But we need your help. As a non-profit organization, we rely heavily on the support of generous individuals like yourself. And no amount is too small. By choosing to contribute to our Find a Voice | Fund a Voice campaign, you are helping a child gain the ability to communicate with the world around him. What an invaluable gift. Kenny and Vicki Scianna came in contact with The Children's Center about a year ago and were so moved by the work that is done in this place that they set up an endowment in the name of their daughter, Blair, who died 5 years ago, but whose life continues to touch all who were fortunate enough to know her. Blair, who was born with cerebral palsy, was non-verbal, but had no problem expressing her abundant love, joy, wit, and wicked sense of humor with all who met her. The Sciannas saw a passion in the staff at The Children's Center and a mission that resonated with theirs, and they hope that you'll join them in making sure that children like Blair can continue finding their voice at The Children's Center by making a contribution to Find a Voice | Fund a Voice, which goes directly to this memorial endowment. Whether it is money for travel to research sites or paying registration fees for conferences, many students find that due to their financial obligations and rising debt they cannot afford to undertake extracurricular activities like research. For example, last fall one student was unable to volunteer in a lab because she was working full time. With funding, students might take advantage of summers and spring breaks to do field research abroad or participate in a research-related internship. Some students can do data collection in their free time, but lack funds to pay for software necessary for analysis. We encourage students to present at conferences, but have limited funds to help them pay for travel. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you! With their signature gold blazers, this 42-year tradition continues to be a part of the Southern Miss story. Today, Southern Style is comprised of student leaders whose purpose is to connect students to the institution during new student orientation and to serve as the official host group for the University. A spirit of excellence has become synonymous with Southern Style. Their training includes a 16-week course, a training week before the start of the orientation season and participation in the National Orientation Director’s Association (NODA) regional meeting during the spring semester. The Southern Regional Orientation Workshop (SROW) is held annually on a college campus and is the epicenter of best practices within the field of orientation, transition and retention. This year, SROW will be held in Orlando, Florida on the campus of the University of Central Florida. During this trip, the new team will have the opportunity to network with more than 2,200 peers from the southeastern region and gain valuable opportunities to explore Orlando. SROW will cost more this year than in previous years, due to the location of the conference and the opportunities to expose the team to all that Orlando offers. Every former Southern Style member knows that belonging to this prestigious organization means so much more than getting that gold jacket. Upon selection, students commit to devoutly serving The University of Southern Mississippi throughout their year on the team. Why do universities need food pantries? <ul> <li> 75% of students are “non-traditional,” meaning they support families and/or work full-time jobs/multiple jobs. </li> </ul> <ul> <li> Tuition has increased, while wages for a majority of workers have remained stagnant. </li> <li> 32% of students report that food insecurity compromised their full potential in school, leading them to miss class due to feeling sick and unable to concentrate, ultimately dropping a class or even dropping out of school. </li> <li> Congressional Report, "Alarming Snapshot of Adjunct Faculty," reports that 75.5% of academia is composed of adjunct faculty who live at or below the national poverty line. </li> <li> 50% of citizens in Mississippi have higher health care costs due to lack of food security. </li> <li> International, out-of state and homeless students experience significant challenges ensuring consistent housing, accessing transportation and securing consistent healthy meals (particularly during school holidays). </li> </ul> Who is eligible for services? USM students, faculty and staff. WHEN YOU WALK THROUGH THE DOORS OF THE CHILDREN’S CENTER FOR COMMUNICATION AND DEVELOPMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI, you are instantly greeted by children who are more than their diagnoses—children who have defied odds since day one and have established their own milestones for success. Children enrolled at The Children’s Center present a wide variety of special needs and diagnoses, ranging from (but not limited to) speech, hearing and language disorders, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome to autism spectrum disorder, rare genetic disorders or other conditions related to premature birth. With a passionate team of specialists, The Children’s Center provides an individualized therapy plan for each child and guides families as they journey through countless challenges and triumphs. Each infant, toddler and preschooler enrolled at The Children’s Center receives services from a specialized therapy team during small group, center-based programming or through individual, home and community-based programming. Therapy teams are led by a speech-language pathologist or early oral interventionist and consist of one or more specialists, including a special educator, physical therapist, occupational therapist, psychologist, audiologist or social worker.
