USM to Perform in the Canary Islands

Dr. John Wooton, percussion professor at Southern Miss, will be taking a small percussion ensemble to perform at the International New Music Festival at the Conservatory of Music in Tenerife, Spain (Canarias). The group will perform three programs including one concert with the percussion ensemble at the conservatory.  The same concert was recently played at Southern Miss when the students from Tenerife visited Hattiesburg in April as part of this exchange. Another concert will feature Dr. Wooton and his students will accompany him.  A third concert will feature the students of USM and their original compositions.  The group will also take part in master classes, clinics and various rehearsals.

This is a great opportunity for these students to show off our world-class percussion studio and interact with other percussionists from around the world. Our students will be premiering several compositions written for them and by them. They will also be premiering steel pans and Rudimental drumming, neither of which have been played in the Music Conservatory before.

The Conservatorio de Música de Tenerife is located in Santa Cruz, on the island of Tenerife of the Canary Islands, a province of Spain. This institution is considered one of the finest music schools in all of Europe.

The funds from this campaign will help us to cover lodging for the ensemble members, as well as their travel to and from the competition. No donation is too small, and we are greatly appreciative of any support provided.

Southern Miss...TO THE TOP!!!
